The Christmas Cactus, which botanists name Schlumbergera, represents an excellent choice for indoor winter decoration because it produces beautiful flowers during the holiday season. The tropical plant, which grows in Brazilian rainforests, requires different care methods since it belongs to a distinct plant group from desert cacti. Your Christmas cactus will maintain its beauty through the entire year if you follow this basic maintenance guide.

Provide the right light

Your Christmas cactus requires placement in an area that receives bright light without direct sunlight. The plant will thrive in a north or east-facing window because this location protects it from direct sunlight, which causes leaf damage.

Water Carefully

You should water your plant when the top inch of soil reaches a dry state, which you can feel by touching it. It prefers damp soil conditions, which must remain dry without becoming flooded, so protect it from standing water. The drainage holes in your pot should exist because they help maintain root health. After the flowering period ends, reduce watering because plants require less water during this time.

Maintain Ideal temperature

Your Christmas Cactus needs to stay in a space that maintains a temperature range of 18 to 24°C (65–75°F). Plants should stay away from direct contact with heaters and fireplaces because these temperature shifts will result in bud loss.

Encourage blooming

The plant requires 12 to 14 hours of darkness every night for six to eight weeks before you want it to bloom, and you should maintain its temperature at 15 to 18°C (59–65°F). You should keep the plant in its current position because movement will cause the buds to detach.

Feed and Prune

During the spring and summer months, apply balanced water-soluble fertilizer to the plant at monthly intervals. The plant requires a pinch of segments after flowering to achieve fuller growth.
