How to Grow Ground Cherries at Home: A Beginner’s Guide

Ground cherries are attractive and small fruiting plants that produce sweet, golden berries that are nestled in papery husks. These cherries are related to tomatoes and tomatillos; however, what you need to know is that it is quite easy to grow ground cherries if you live in an area with proper sunlight and warm temperatures. Here, in this article, we will tell you how you can grow a Ground Cherry plant from scratch.
Choosing the Right Location
Ground Cherries are grown best in warm temperatures, which means that you need to choose a spot that receives around six hours of sunlight every day. Pick a spot that has good air circulation and protection from strong winds. On the other hand, if you are planting them in a container, then you need to place the pot in a location that receives consistent light.
Prepare the soil
Ground cherries like loose, fertile, and well-draining soil. Before planting, you need to mix compost or well-rotted organic matter into the soil to enhance the structure and fertility of the soil. Do not plant the seeds in areas where water collects, as too much wet soil can damage the roots.
Start the seeds
Ground cherries can be propagated through seeds. It is advisable to plant the seeds a few weeks before the last frost in case you hail from a cooler region. Place the seeds in damp starting soil approximately ¼ inch deep.
Plant and Space the Seedlings
It is recommended to use a pot that is at least 12 inches both wide and deep or plant directly in the ground. Ensure that the plants are spaced approximately 18 to 24 inches apart. They are likely to become bushy; hence, it is important to provide support.
Water and Fertilize Regularly
You should water the plants once the soil at the surface starts drying up. Water is very crucial, especially during flowering and fruiting stages. It is, however, important to ensure that you do not overwater the plants. Using mulch can help to conserve water.
The plants normally do not need lots of fertilizers. The only recommended way of feeding them is using a little amount of compost or fertilizer.
Harvest the fruits
One of the easiest ways to know when a ground cherry plant is ready to be harvested is to watch its husks. As the plant matures, they naturally fall from the plant and turn golden-yellow. You should collect these fallen fruits regularly and remove any damaged or spoiled berries. Ensure that the harvested fruits remain in their husks until you are ready to eat them, as it preserves their long-lasting freshness.
