The Narcissus Story: A Flower That Signals New Beginnings

The arrival of spring after winter is loved by many as nature blooms with beautiful flowers and gardens, and streets appear colourful. Among these early blooms, the Narcissus flower, also known as the daffodil, becomes the symbol of the arrival of the spring season. 

Across the world, the flower is regarded as a symbol of hope, resilience, and renewal. Since it blooms after the cold winters, it reminds people that there is life after darkness. 


Origins and Botanical Background


The Narcissus flower is from the Amaryllis family and belongs to the group of spring-flowering plants. It is found mainly in Southern Europe and Northern Africa. The greatest diversity of this flower is found in Portugal and Spain. With time, the flowers spread to the rest of the world and adapted according to different climates.

Breeders have bred multiple varieties of this flower. Today, almost 32,000 varieties exist all over the world, which are different in size, shape, and colour. 

The plant has the ability to survive in harsh conditions and grow every spring season because it grows directly from bulbs stored underground.  


A Flower with Ancient Roots


The flower’s history goes back several years. As per the historical records, the flowers were first grown in Greek gardens in 300 BCE. The name ‘Narcissus’ originates from Greek mythology. Narcissus was a young man who admired his own reflection and eventually turned into a flower. 

During the time of the Roman Empire, Narcissus bulbs were traded. These bulbs were then planted across Europe and the Middle East. The people of the Roman Empire admired these flowers because they were extremely beautiful. They used these flowers to decorate their homes and villas. After this, during the medieval period, people grew these flowers because they believed the flowers had medicinal qualities and can treat wounds and other illnesses. 


Cultural Meaning Around the World


With time, the Narcissus flower gained different meanings. In Europe, it got associated with renewal and resurrection. It was popularly used during Eastern celebrations.

In Wales, Daffodils became a national symbol. China grows a different species of this flower, ‘Narcissus Tazetta’, during the Chinese New Year because it symbolises prosperity and good fortune. In Japan, the flower is known by the name ‘Suisen” and represents simplicity and purity.

The flower is not merely known for its beauty. It has transformed into a symbol of hope and resilience. The flowers' growth after the harsh winter season reflects new beginnings even after dark times. Countries use this flower in awareness campaigns because it symbolises strength and survival.
